Selfish Me

Selfish Me

I understand
            For the race of man
                        It is a common fate,

To self-obsess
            Viewing one’s own life—
                        We tend to just fixate.

This lens of ours
            Inwardly inspired
                        Is clouded when we view,

We must be roused—
            Humbled “to a fault”
                        To see another’s hue.

Our own bright light
            Must be dimmed a bit
                        So we can see beyond,

Life’s glorious
            Many fish appear
Than just us in the pond.

No, life does not
            Contain only us.
                        It’s sad, but also true,

Our happiness
            Greatly multiplies
                        When we see others too.

(I was reflecting how self-absorbed I’ve become as 2 people separately reminded me how my conversation was only on my thesis.  I am trying to adjust “my view”).
